The Ayam Cemani is a unique breed. To the untrained eye, it is simply a black chicken, but true enthusiasts know the strict standards required for a perfect specimen.
Despite their somewhat intimidating gothic appearance, Ayam Cemanis are generally friendly and intelligent. They are active birds that enjoy foraging but can be docile with regular handling.
The internal black coloration is caused by a genetic mutation known as fibromelanosis. This complex gene rearrangement leads to hyper-pigmentation. While the bird lays cream-colored eggs (a common misconception is that the eggs are black), the embryo inside will develop the black pigmentation.
